Mark Lauby Appointed to National Academies’ Electrical Forum

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mark Lauby, NERCs senior vice president and chief engineer, has been appointed to the new Forum on Informed Investment, Technology, and Policy Pathways for the Electricity System and Interdependent Energy Infrastructure assembled by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) and sponsored by the United States Department of Energy. The forum aims to provide a trusted and balanced venue for leaders from across the electricity system to share information and discuss solutions for the complex issues that arise from grid modernization efforts.

Lauby brings 46 years of electric industry experience to this forum, having joined NERC in January 2007 and held several positions. During his career, he has served on numerous Boards and committees, including the North American Energy Standards Board, the Department of Energys Electric Advisory Committee, and Excellent Energy International Co., Ltd. He acted as chair for numerous Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) working groups and received multiple awards, including the 1992 IEEE Walter Fee Young Engineer of the Year Award and the 2014 IEEE Power and Energy Societys Roy Billinton Power System Reliability Award. IEEE named him a fellow in November 2011 for “leadership in the development and application of techniques for bulk power system reliability, and he serves on the IEEE Power and Energy Society Executive Advisory Committee. In 2020, the National Academy of Engineering elected Lauby as a member, citing his development and application of techniques for electric grid reliability analysis.

“I am pleased to accept this incredible honor, said Lauby. “The forum represents an opportunity to make significant progress in addressing the present and future risks to the reliability and security of the grid.

The NASEM electrical forum will host a series of webinars in April 2025, exploring emerging challenges for the U.S. bulk power system.
